    In Uttarakhand, the prisoners are encouraged to work in the industrial units of the jails. Educational programs providing academic qualifications are also available to the prisoners through IGNOU and NIOS. Jail Authority is conducting programmes such as satsang, yoga, meditation, adult education classes etc. by inviting eminent personalities. Conducting Yoga and meditation classes for inmates once in the week on regular basis. Social workers and NGOs visit jails for strengthening the efforts for reformation and rehabilitation of the inmates which includes providing of educational materials, sports items, health/eye check-ups, cultural programmes. This step has restored a sense of dignity of self-esteem in the prisoner, which is a major input for rehabilitation after release.

    “e-prisons” system has been functional in all the jails of the State and all the jail records are being maintained on day-to-day basis through “e-prisons” software.

    Yoga practice in all the jails are continuing and the NGO is also helping in preparing some of the inmates as professional yoga trainers which will help them to get a suitable employment after their release form the Jail. The presence of NGOs in the field of prison reforms helps to understand the requirements of the prisoners and their families in terms of humane prison services, reformation and rehabilitation measures and adherence to human rights.

    • Vocational training programmes are conducted for the prisoners to make them self-dependent after their release from the Jails. The prisoners are encouraged to work in the industrial units of the jail i.e. carpentry workshop, Gamla making, bird house making, Tailoring Unit, Carpet workshop, welding workshop. Every prisoner is entitled to get wages for their work @ un-skilled prisoners Rs. 55 per day semi-skilled prisoners Rs. 65 per day & killed prisoners Rs. 85 per day.
    • Bakery Unit –Bakery unit has been established in District Jail Dehradun jail in which prisoners manufacturing bakery products like pastries, cakes, patties, breads, buns etc. which is consumed by the prisoners. Previously, the bakery product like buns were purchased through outside market.
    • Jail Radio – An amplifier based designated Jail Radio is operation inside the prison of district Jail Dehradun/ Haridwar & Subjail Haldwani which is entertaining, immensely informative as well as motivational to the prisoners. It is purely run by the prisoners, that is to say, the radio jockeys are prisoners.

    A system of CCTV cameras has been installed in jails for safety and security of prisoners in the prison. Every nook and cranny of jail is being covered by the CCTV cameras and real time video footages of the same are continuously monitored in the operating room. Door Frame metal detector, Hand held metal detector, X-ray baggage inspection system, Single Pole Based Ferrous Metal Detector, Walkie-talkie and body-worn camera has been incorporated in jails for security of prison.

    E-prison platform, a software for accurate information update of any prisoner, to keep record of all prisoner and their movement activity. All the prisons in the state of Uttarakhand have installed e-prison portal. As mentioned above, e-prison portal is handy in identifying undertrials who are eligible for release U/s 436A of CrPC. Identification of undertrials who are eligible for release U/s 436A of Cr.P.C. is carried out on monthly basis by thoroughly scrutinizing the report generated by the e-prison portal in this regards. Prisoners who are found to be eligible for release U/s 436A of Cr.P.C. in the near future are weeded out and report in respect of the same is forwarded to the concerned trial courts.

    • Visitor management system to register the visits of friends and relatives.
    • Prions Inmate Calling System set up in the Jail premises with inmates being provided a medium to communicate with their family members.
    • Video conferencing platform for inmates to connect with their legal aid lawyers.
    • Solar geysers in the Jail have been fabricated to provide hot water to inmates.
    • The facility of existing coupon system in jail canteen can be converted into Cashless Canteen System through online payment gateway in jails in order to have more transparency as well as to provide better facilities.
