Before the formation of the Uttarakhand state, under the uttar pradesh state the name of prison department was "Prison Administration and Correctional Services". After the emergence of the new state, the department came into existence with its traditional name "Prison Department". In the state, 01 Central Jail, 07 District jails, Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Almora, Chamoli, 02 Sub-jails, Roorkee (Janpad Haridwar) and Haldwani (Janpad Nainital), and an open jail with specific policies, Dr. Samarthananda Camp, Sitarganj, udham singh nagar.

There are no Janpad level or sub-district prisons in the remaining 06 districts of the state; these areas still have Swaraj Checks and Revenue Jail of the old time, where the work of the detainees is being done. District prison is under construction in Pithoragarh and Champawat districts. Land for prison has been selected in Rudraprayag district

There have been widespread changes in the security of prisoners, captive administration, corrective procedures etc in the perspectives of the instructions issued by the High Court, High Court National Human Rights Commission, Home Ministry, Government of India and the State Government. Improvisation of corrective changes within the prisoners so that they can be relieved of the prison and re-established in the mainstream of the society and positive control can be found at the rate of crime. This has become the main purpose of the prison department.
